On May 2, 2005, we had the pleasure of having our first kennel inspection. Having heard many stories from, "they call before coming," to "they were there when I got home," I had no idea what to expect. Here is my experience. I left for approximately 30 minutes to run an errand. Upon my return, there was the note from the AKC. We came by . . . we have the right to . . . and you must call immediately! At that point, I began having an anxiety attack while thinking, "Am I ready?" Thank the Lord, I was. I called Mr. John, the AKC inspector, and he returned to the kennel in less than 15 minutes. After some small talk he went straight to business. We picked up a few random dogs, which he scanned for microchips. He then looked over the kennel and complimented me on how well it was made and how clean and sanitary it was. He also asked where I got the "kennel kit" from. As you all know, there is no "kennel kit" like my kennel. Our kennel was built with alot of hard work, sweat, and brainstorming between my dad, my husband, and myself. After inspecting the structure, we moved to the records. Mr. John offered the AKC Rules and Regulations book that has all of the pre-made forms and rules of AKC. However, I had already re-created the forms. He searched hard, but to no avail. I passed without any errors or corrections. After the record inspection, we laughed at the dogs playing, and had a great time talking about show, where he was from, and how he became a inspector. I had a wonderful experience. No head-eating AKC man came to my kennel, as I had been told happened all of those times to many other breeders. In closing, I would only suggest that you "stay prepared!" Keep up with the paperwork, and try not to lag behind. Otherwise, the AKC man may have a surprise visit at your place next! |
